CONFUSING MANUAL (10 january 2005)In my last weblog (click) you can read how I failed to install an Internet router and had to invoke the assistance of my wizard nephew. Of course, we all want to learn from our mistakes, don't we? So I asked my nephew what I had done wrong. An important reason why my efforts had gone amiss was that I had plugged the modem cable into the wrong router port. It should have been inserted into the port on the right, but I had taken the one on the left. I know I'm not a genius. But had I really been that stupid? The following day I had a look at Sitecom's manual. And there was this picture:
Do you see what I see? The modem cable goes into the left. I had done exactly what the manual suggested! The next day, I happened to browse the CDROM that had come with the router. For advanced users, there was more information. Finally, I hit upon this (correct) picture:
It's quite unclear why Sitecom only offers a correct diagram to the advanced users. I'm also wondering: how can Sitecom have the nerve to charge 25 cents a minute from people who do exactly what Sitecom's manual advises? And does the helpdesk say: "Sorry, there's a mistake in our manual"? No, their helpdesk seems to be manned by autists who sell you nothing but useless dribble." So are Sitecom routers really very cheap? Well - only if you don't reckon the time wasted, and the annoyance and loss of money caused by their useless helpdesk.
