TRAFFIC AS A GAME (6 september 2004)In my last weblog, I promised you I'd write about the joys of cycling.
Amsterdam is a great city to live in. There are, however, a few things that spoil the fun. One problem is street traffic: it seems to make many people behave like idiots -- walking backwards onto the driveway, driving on the wrong side of the road or parking on the pavement, etc. Or as the advertisements say: you name it, Amsterdam's got it! All this was enough to spoil the fun of my cycling in Amsterdam ... until recently an idea struck me. I'm quite fond of playing computer games like Quake. So I figured: "If a dangerous world like Quake is such great fun, why can't cycling in Amsterdam be pleasant as well?" From that moment on, riding a bicycle has no longer been something annoying to me, but a thrilling experience -- avoiding creepy monsters and sidestepping dangerous enemies ... I never knew cycling could be so exciting. There is only one little problem left: I never pass to level 2 ...
