TAKING PICTURES IN AMSTERDAM  (13 june 2004)

Walking in Amsterdam with a camera may lead to unexpected pictures.

Let's start with some strange kind of discrimination in the Vrijheidslaan , where people can wait for public transport. I wonder why the people waiting on the left should be given a better shelter and a wider island than those on the right. And what could have been the reason not to protect those on the right with a steel fence?

Taking the picture below (in the red light district), I was wondering if there was an XTC laboratory behind the front window? Or would it just be the home of a modern alchemist?

A dentist in the Sarphatipark area with a sense of humour had this nice little display in his window representing a (far from painless) tooth extraction.

Those who live live in Amsterdam know that scaffolding is usually placed so that it completely blocks the pavement. But this construction must have been erected by the only construction workers in the capital with some social awareness. It offers a neat passage to pedestrians. Bravo!

And what about the picture down here? Are these the famous tulips from Amsterdam? Or is it a new species of magnolia?

After a little research, I can tell it consists of flowery plants draped around a steel frame. Highly ingenious!

Any idea what the Dutch text on this sign means?

Yes indeed: "Keep emergency door free".

Finally the last picture: a new shop was opened in our area.

I don't know if they sell dildos inside, sexy underwear or girlie magazines. But from the outside, it all looked quite harmless ... until somebody showed his/her frustrations by throwing paint and bricks at the shop window.

Yes, unexpected, didn't I tell you?
