'IDOLS'  (15 may 2004)

It can hardly have escaped anybody in the Netherlands that millions of teenagers have lately been absorbed by a phenomenon called Idols.

Idols was a tv contest covering several weekly instalments. Winner would be the one considered to be the best pop idol. In my view, the most interesting instalments were the first, in which young people audition who don't even have enough talent to entertain their own family.

The final winner was a youngster named Boris, whose name had already been chanted by my daughters for weeks.

  Boris

Boris had made music before. A former fellow-musician had made a CD of Boris's earlier recordings, and this CD was issued for free with the purchase of the magazine Nieuwe Revu.

Needless to say that my two teenage daughters went to the shop to buy this magazine - only for the CD, of course. But at every shop they visited it appeared to be sold out. The following day they tried again. But alas, without any luck!

That same day we went to Bergen, to spend the weekend there. After we had arrived, we took some time to explore the village individually. The daughters had been talking about Idols a lot. So while I wandered about the village, I considered that Bergen does not have many teenage inhabitants. So why not look for the magazine here?

And lo and behold: the third shop that I tried had the magazine - and the desired CD - in stock.

Needless to say my daughters were overjoyed. Against her habits, my younger daughter didn't even protest when I told her she had to pay for the magazine.

In the next weblog I'll tell you a little more about this visit to Bergen.
